On Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day, popular DJ and billionaire heiress Florence Otedola, known as DJ Cuppy, shared a message that has stirred widespread reactions across social media. Her patriotic post, which celebrated Nigeria despite its challenges, quickly drew mixed responses from the public.

Cuppy took to Instagram to remind followers that Nigeria remains her birthplace and her home. She wrote that in another lifetime, she would still choose to be Nigerian, while praising the resilience and spirit of her fellow citizens. For many, her words came across as a refreshing show of pride in the nation at a time when morale is low due to economic and political struggles.

But not everyone received the message warmly. Critics were quick to point out her privileged background as the daughter of billionaire businessman Femi Otedola. They argued that her optimism does not reflect the daily realities of ordinary Nigerians who face insecurity, unemployment, inflation, and a rising cost of living. One critic wrote that such a statement was “easy to say when you’re a billionaire’s child,” while another suggested her words would carry more weight if she lived without the safety net of wealth and influence.
Despite the backlash, many Nigerians also defended her, noting that patriotism is not reserved only for those who struggle. Supporters argued that her message was meant to inspire hope and should be taken as a celebration of national identity rather than a dismissal of hardship.
For now, DJ Cuppy has not responded directly to the criticism. Her Independence Day post, however, has succeeded in sparking a conversation about patriotism, privilege, and what it means to publicly declare love for Nigeria in the current climate.
