CPC Mandates DSTV To Compensate Customers

The Consumer Protection Council has deemed Multichoice Nigeria Limited, the operators of DSTV, liable and has found that the company has violated the rights of customers in relation to its provision of Digital Satellite Television Service.

MultiChoice has come under criticism severally for its operation of DSTV in Nigeria, but it is the first time the company has been punished for what the CPC has found to be practices harmful against customers.

The CPC has mandated MultiChoice to pay compensation to its customers for their loss of viewing time which resulted from the company’s inaction. Additionally, MultiChoice has been mandated to provide toll free lines for customers as opposed to the current system of charging customers for calls to their customer care line.

The CPC also identified other directed that MultiChoice must now comply with in the next 90 and 180 days. MultiChoice will now be required to spread its sports stations across bouquets as opposed to the current arrangement where most of the sports channels are only available on premium subscription.

The firm will also be required to provide free to air channels whenever subscriptions run out and has asked that MultiChoice review its billing system as its present system of billing โ€œis not contemporaneous with the provision of serviceโ€.
