Court Adjourns Trial of Anthony Joshua’s Driver to February 25

Court Adjourns Trial of Anthony Joshua’s Driver to February 25A Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the 46-year-old driver involved in the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two close associates of British boxing champion Anthony Joshua.

The hearing has been rescheduled to February 25, 2026, following a request by the prosecution for time to duplicate the case file and forward it to the Ogun State Attorney-General’s office for legal guidance.

Kayode is facing a four-count charge, including dangerous driving causing death, reckless driving, driving without due care, and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s licence. The court also granted him bail in the sum of ₦5 million, with two sureties, pending the next hearing.

The tragic accident occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, when the Lexus SUV driven by Kayode reportedly collided with a stationary truck. While Anthony Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries, Latif Ayodele, Joshua’s personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach, were killed.

The incident drew widespread attention even beyond Nigeria, highlighting concerns about road safety and the need for stricter traffic regulations in Nigeria. The adjournment comes in the midst of public scrutiny, with many emphasizing the importance of accountability in high-profile accidents.

Authorities have noted that proper legal processes must be followed to ensure justice for the deceased and their families. Meanwhile, the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway remains a key focus for road safety campaigns, given its history of frequent accidents involving both private and commercial vehicles.

Nigerians await the continuation of the trial, as the case has greatly shown the role of law enforcement and the judiciary in addressing road safety violations. Observers believe the outcome will not only provide closure for the victims’ families but could also serve as a deterrent for negligent driving across the country.

For now, attention remains on the February 25 hearing, which will determine the next steps in this widely reported legal proceeding.
