The Coroner’s Court sitting at the Yaba Magistrate Court has adjourned proceedings until April 14, 2026, for the commencement of an inquiry into the death of 21 month old Master Nkanu Nnamdi Esege.
The toddler was the son of celebrated Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and medical doctor Dr Ivara Esege. The court’s decision marks the beginning of formal legal steps aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the child’s passing.

According to court officials, the adjournment will allow for the proper arrangement of witnesses and presentation of relevant documents ahead of the inquiry. The coroner is expected to examine medical reports, testimonies and other material evidence that may assist in determining the cause and circumstances of the death.
A coroner’s inquest is a fact finding proceeding designed to clarify how a person died. It is not a criminal trial but may make recommendations or refer matters for further investigation if necessary.
Legal observers note that the process is often thorough, especially in high profile cases involving public figures. The court is expected to ensure due process while respecting the privacy of the bereaved family.
Neither Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie nor Dr Ivara Esege has made a fresh public statement regarding the adjournment. The family has largely maintained privacy since news of the child’s death became public.
The upcoming hearing on April 14, 2026, will formally open the inquiry phase, where witnesses may be called and evidence reviewed under oath.
The case has drawn public attention due to Chimamanda Adichie’s global reputation as an award winning author and public intellectual. However, court officials have emphasized that the proceedings will follow standard legal protocols applicable to all inquests.
As the date approaches, legal analysts say the focus will remain on ensuring a transparent and factual process to determine the circumstances of Master Nkanu Nnamdi Esege’s death.
