Colombia Legalises Gay Marriage

Colombia has become the fourth to legalize gay marriage following a ruling by the country’s highest court on Thursday.

The Colombian constitution ย had extended property law rights to same sex couples since 2007 but deprived them of other rights such as healthcare insurance and pension.

However, a request byย the country’s Inspector General that the Constitutional Court invalidate all same sex marriages approved in Colombia put the issue of gay marriage back at the fore in 2015. Eventually, on April 7, 2016, the Constitutional Court voted 6-3 against a proposal which said that marriage applies only to one man and one woman.

A second ruling on Thursday by the country’s highest court ended with magistrates votingย 6-3 of same sex marriage.
