In a recent interview with Chude on her talk show – Toke Moments, that quickly gained attention across social media platforms, Toke shared her personal decision regarding tithing and charitable giving. According to her, she stopped paying tithes because many of the churches she knows are financially comfortable.

“I stopped paying tithe because all the churches I know are rich. I would rather go to hospitals and pay all the bills for the maternity ward. Churches already have money, let’s help other people that they can’t reach,” she said.

Her comments have since generated mixed reactions, with supporters praising her for prioritizing humanitarian efforts, while others debated the theological and personal implications of her stance.

Toke Makinwa, who has consistently shared her views on faith, relationships and personal growth over the years, made it clear that her decision was based on her convictions. She emphasized her desire to directly impact lives by assisting vulnerable people, particularly mothers and newborns in hospital maternity wards.

The conversation around tithing is not new in Nigeria, where religion plays a significant role in daily life and church attendance remains high. Tithing, which traditionally involves donating a percentage of one’s income to a church, is widely practiced across Christian denominations.

However, discussions around how funds are managed by religious institutions have increasingly surfaced in public discourse. Toke’s statement appears to reflect a broader shift among some individuals who prefer direct philanthropy or community based support over institutional giving.

On social media, many followers commended her transparency and applauded the idea of supporting healthcare facilities, especially maternity wards that often cater to low income families. Others argued that tithing is a spiritual principle that goes beyond the financial status of a church.

As reactions continue to pour in, Toke has not indicated that she intends to debate her position further. Instead, her comments seem to underline a personal approach to faith and giving rather than a generalized directive to others.

The media personality has long been vocal about self awareness and living according to one’s beliefs. Over the years, she has built a brand centered around confidence, independence and candid conversations, which may explain why her remarks quickly trended.

While the topic remains sensitive for many, her statement has reignited conversations about philanthropy, faith practices and the different ways individuals choose to support their communities.
