The 14th Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) concluded its dazzling week in Lagos with the spectacular Globe Awards ceremony, transforming the venue into a swirling constellation of Africa’s brightest stars and political leadership. It was a grand, heartfelt affirmation that African cinema has ascended to a new height of global influence. From the flash of designer gowns on the carpet to the emotional acceptance speeches on stage, the evening was a potent mix of high-stakes glamour and profound industry celebration.

The ceremony, which was the official closing of the festival, drew an enviable audience that showcased the growing alignment between government and the creative economy. Prominent among the attendees were figures like His Excellency, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, represented by the Honourable Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa.
The nightโs most poignant moments revolved around the newly instituted Herbert Wigwe Awards for Excellence, a tribute to the late business titan and philanthropist. The award was presented to the Governor of Delta State, His Excellency, Sheriff Oborevwori, and accepted by his deputy, His Excellency, Monday Onyeme. Minister Hannatu Musa Musawa also received this prestigious award on behalf of the Vice President, Kashim Shettima. The tribute segment, a moving short film celebrating Wigweโs legacy, deeply resonated with the audience, creating a powerful emotional anchor for the evening that merged honour for a beloved leader with recognition for todayโs industry trailblazers, including international actor and filmmaker, David Oyelowo.
The red carpet, as expected, was a fashion spectacle unlike any other. Nollywood royalty showed up and showed out, with stars like Ini Edo, Omowunmi Dada, Rita Dominic, Osas Ighodaro, Kunle Remi, and many more, serving high-octane couture looks that immediately set social media alight. The atmosphere, masterfully guided by the night’s host, the celebrated comedian and actor Bovi, was electric yet relaxed, ensuring a perfect flow between technical awards, star-studded presentations, and heartfelt industry toasts.
In her opening remarks at the AFRIFF Globe Award night, Aโisha Umar Mumuni, Chief Digital Officer of MTN Nigeria, highlighted the significance of the event not just as a celebration of film but as a symbol of Africaโs cultural and digital transformation. She emphasised the powerful role of storytelling in shaping identity and economic growth across the continent before sharing these inspiring words, โThe land of peace, Nigeriaโs first stronghold of freedom and harmony, sets the stage where powerful stories ignite and Africaโs great economy sharpens its edge. We didnโt just tell films; we built cultures that connect us across the globe. Tonight, as we stand together, we celebrate the beauty of a bold new digital world, a world where MTN drives digital change for Africaโs thriving economy. This eveningโs films speak deeply to who we are as Africans, showing the vibrant storytelling that proves Africa is ready to play on the global stage. Thank you all for a fantastic week of creativity and connection.โ
The closing night wrapped up in a thrilling performance led by music star Flavour, which perfectly captured the intersection of film and the continentโs dominant cultural export.
