Nigerian Army Restores Official X Account After August 2026 Cyber Breach

The Nigerian Army has restored its official X account after a cyber breach disrupted access, following unauthorised access reported on August 29, 2026. The military announced the successful recovery on Sunday, November 8, through a statement published on its restored account.

According to the Nigerian Army, efforts to resolve the security incident have successfully reinstated administrative control over @HQNigerianArmy. The restoration ends a period when the military could not communicate normally through its primary X platform.

During the disruption, the unauthorised access raised concerns about the security of the Army’s digital communication channels. Although the statement did not identify the attackers, it confirmed that the incident involved unauthorised access to its official account.

The Army also did not disclose how the intruders gained access or what activities they performed during the breach. However, its latest announcement confirms that administrators have regained control and secured the account.

The military described the recovery as part of its commitment to protecting information integrity across its digital platforms. It also emphasised the importance of maintaining credible communication channels for Nigerians and other stakeholders.

Furthermore, the Army thanked Nigerians, media organisations and stakeholders for their patience throughout the disruption. It acknowledged their cooperation in accessing credible information through alternative official communication platforms.

The statement also encouraged members of the public to reconnect with its restored X account. According to the military, the platform will resume regular updates covering operations, achievements and institutional developments.

This development marks an important step towards restoring normal public engagement through the Army’s established communication channel. Military organisations increasingly depend on digital platforms to share verified information and maintain public confidence.

Consequently, protecting official accounts remains essential, particularly when misinformation can create unnecessary confusion. The incident also demonstrates how unauthorised access can temporarily interrupt communication between security institutions and citizens.

However, the Army has not announced whether it plans additional cybersecurity measures following the incident. Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, signed the November 8 statement.

She reaffirmed the military’s commitment to transparent communication, effective public engagement and stronger relationships with Nigerians. With administrative control restored, the Nigerian Army expects its official X platform to resume regular communication.
