Nathaniel Bassey hits one billion YouTube views, sets African gospel record

Nathaniel Bassey has made history with more than one billion YouTube views, reportedly becoming the first African gospel artiste to reach the milestone on the platform.

Data on his official channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main, showed 1,014,544,577 views and 5.24 million subscribers as of November 2, 2026.

The achievement comes more than 15 years after the channel was created on March 4, 2011. His music releases, worship sessions and online prayer meetings have helped grow his audience over the years.

Hallelujah Challenge boosts global reach

One of the major drivers of Bassey’s online popularity is the Hallelujah Challenge, the virtual praise and worship programme he launched in June 2017.

What started as a midnight praise session on Instagram Live has grown into a global Christian gathering. The month-long programme attracts participants from different countries through live broadcasts and recorded sessions.

The October 2026 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge also coincided with his YouTube milestone.

Popular worship songs expand his audience

Bassey’s music catalogue has also played a major role in his growth. The pastor, trumpeter and songwriter is known for songs such as ‘Imela’, ‘Onise Iyanu’, ‘Olowogbogboro’, ‘You Are God’, ‘Yahweh Sabaoth’ and ‘Tobechukwu’.

Over the years, he has established himself as one of Nigeria’s prominent gospel ministers, attracting listeners beyond the country.

Personal struggles behind his worship journey

Despite his success, Bassey’s journey has also featured difficult personal moments.

In October 2025, he recounted how his wife suffered five miscarriages while he was leading the Hallelujah Challenge.

He said he continued hosting the live praise sessions during the difficult period. He also returned to lead worship even when his wife was in the hospital.

The minister sought his wife’s forgiveness for publicly sharing the experience. He recalled how he continued to worship despite their struggles.
