Doris Ogala remanded in Ikoyi prison over cyberbullying, attempted extortion charges

Nollywood actress Doris Ogala was remanded at the Ikoyi correctional centre in Lagos over charges bordering on cyberbullying, attempted extortion and the alleged publication of personal materials without consent in a case filed by Chris Okafor, founder of Mountain of Liberty and Miracle Ministry.

Ogala was arraigned before a federal high court in Lagos on Wednesday on four counts, including spreading false information. She pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

During proceedings, Tolulope Mokolu, the prosecuting counsel, asked the court to remand the actress pending trial, saying he needed time to review and respond to her bail application, which he had just received.

However, N. C. Atulomah, Ogala’s defence counsel, opposed the request and urged the court to grant her bail.

He told the court that Ogala was a governorship candidate of a political party in Abia State and promised to produce her at the next hearing.

In his ruling, presiding judge Akintayo Aluko held that the defence had not presented sufficient grounds to justify her release. He ordered her remand at the Nigerian correctional centre and directed an accelerated hearing of her bail application.

The judge adjourned the case until October 30 to hear the bail application.

Ogala alleges oppression

The proceedings later descended into a commotion when Ogala insisted on addressing the court despite attempts by her lawyer and others to calm her.

She shouted, saying, “I must talk, this is Nigeria, they are using government power to oppress me. My boyfriend is using government power to oppress me”.

The judge eventually rose for the day after the situation became uncontrollable.

In an Instagram post, Ogala alleged that Okafor, Jerry Eze, Suleman Johnson and Abia governor Alex Otti were behind her remand because they feared she would reveal secrets about them.

“Jerry Eze, Suleman Johnson and Chris Okafor are responsible for my remand. Alex Otti is fully behind my remand as well. They are afraid of their secret, I know. All of them are responsible, believe me,” she wrote.
