Funke Akindele opens up on emotional struggles, prioritising mental health

Funke Akindele, the Nigerian actress and filmmaker, has opened up about her personal struggles. She revealed that she sometimes cries and breaks down in private before finding the strength to move forward.

In a recent interview with CNN Africa, Akindele discussed how she handles difficult moments despite public attention on her personal life and career.

“I cried, I locked myself in the room, cried, broke down, hit the bed, but I just picked myself up and came back to life,” she said.

Akindele on dealing with public judgement

The actress noted that people often focus on her relationships and marriages. She said the public sees only parts of her personal life.

“Oh yes, lots of times. It is online they see the breakups and the marriages. Sometimes I tell myself, ‘We’ve made a mistake again,’ she said.

Akindele said she has learnt to face challenges rather than worry about what people think.

“People are going to judge you.’ And I’m like, do you care about that? Why don’t I brace up, face it, face the challenges, move on in life, make myself happy, do what is right?”

She added that prioritising her mental health had helped her through difficult periods.

“You have to consider your mental health first, and that’s what I’ve done over the years, and it has helped me,” she said.

Funke Akindele embraces self-care

The actress also spoke about making more time for herself after years of focusing on work.

“I’m trying to catch my groove back. I am trying to get back. Now I’m more intentional about myself, making my hair, looking good,” she said.

Although she remains committed to her career, Akindele said she now understands the need for balance.

“I’ve noticed over the years that it’s not all about the work,” she said.

“You need to take care of yourself, you need to love yourself, you need to have time for your family, your loved ones, because work will go, the family will be there.”

A look at Akindele’s marriages

Akindele was previously married to Kehinde Almaroof Oloyede. Their marriage ended in 2013, less than a year after their wedding.

In 2016, she married Nigerian music producer and filmmaker JJC Skillz. They welcomed twin boys in December 2018.

However, their marriage ended in 2022 over “irreconcilable differences”.
