Ruth Kadiri warns elaborate weddings put pressure on couples

Ruth Kadiri, the Nigerian actress and filmmaker, has cautioned against lavish weddings, saying they place mental and spiritual pressure on couples and their marriages.

In an Instagram video, the movie producer urged people to rethink societal expectations around marriage and success, arguing that the pressure surrounding elaborate ceremonies can affect couples beyond their wedding day.

“I do think that big weddings put pressure on couples,” she said.

“It puts pressure on the marriage itself, and they don’t seem to have realised that because I’m not just talking about spiritual, I’m talking about mentally.”

Kadiri also highlighted the pressure parents place on their children to succeed financially, linking such expectations to the wider demands society imposes on young people.

“It’s the pressure parents put on their children to succeed and bring money home.

“This generation needs to change it.”

The actress’s comments come amid conversations about the financial demands of weddings and the expectations couples face from family members and society.

Kadiri began her acting career in the mid-2000s and has established herself as a prominent figure in Nollywood. She also produces movies, many of which she uploads to YouTube.

She married her husband in a private ceremony in 2019, and the couple have two daughters.

In July, Kadiri opened up about her decision to keep her marriage private, clarifying that she was not deliberately hiding her husband from the public.

She explained that they attend church and public events together, but many people do not recognise him because he is not a celebrity.
