Julián Álvarez has apologised to Atlético Madrid fans over his World Cup comments after scoring the winner against Deportivo La Coruña on Saturday. The Argentine striker admitted his remarks about leaving Atlético Madrid were mistakes, acknowledging supporters’ anger and promising to rebuild their trust.
Speaking to Movistar after Atlético’s 1-0 victory, Álvarez expressed regret over both his words and their timing. He also thanked supporters for standing by him despite the controversy surrounding his future. “I wanted to apologise to our fans for my words during the World Cup,” Álvarez said.
“They were a mistake, both in how I expressed myself and the timing. I understand the fans’ anger. As a fan, I would have been angry too. ”The controversy began when Álvarez expressed his dream of playing for Barcelona during the 2026 World Cup.
His comments fuelled speculation about a potential transfer, angering Atlético supporters who expected greater loyalty from the forward. However, Atlético Madrid refused to sell the Argentine striker to their Spanish rivals. Consequently, Álvarez remained at the club and faced boos from sections of the home crowd during the season’s opening matches.
Saturday’s decisive goal against Deportivo offered Álvarez an opportunity to reconnect with supporters. His strike secured three important points and followed his recent goal against Stuttgart in the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Atlético manager Diego Simeone welcomed Álvarez’s apology and emphasised the importance of having the forward performing at his best. The coach also expressed satisfaction with the striker’s growing confidence and commitment.
Álvarez thanked his teammates for supporting him throughout the difficult period. He also said he felt physically stronger and more comfortable on the pitch as he worked to improve his performances.
The Argentine now hopes hard work and humility will help restore his relationship with Atlético supporters. His apology could mark an important step towards ending the tension surrounding his future.
