British singer RAYE has won the 2026 Mercury Prize for her second studio album, ‘THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE,’ celebrating her remarkable artistic evolution. The singer-songwriter claimed the prestigious award on October 22 at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena, beating eleven other shortlisted albums from acclaimed British and Irish artists.
RAYE’s victory marks another major milestone in her career, following the extraordinary success of her debut album, ‘My 21st Century Blues,’ released independently in 2023. Her winning album explores different musical styles, combining jazz, soul, R&B and classical influences across four sections that reflect emotional experiences and personal growth.
The judges praised the record’s ambition, structure and charm, highlighting RAYE’s imagination and ability to move beyond conventional musical boundaries while delivering a compelling artistic statement. Featuring the hit single ‘WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!,’ the album reached number one on the UK Albums Chart following its release in March 2026.
During her acceptance speech, RAYE expressed gratitude for the recognition, explaining how meaningful it felt to have her commitment to albums acknowledged after earlier career challenges. She also described music as medicine, expressing hope that her album’s message would reach listeners who needed encouragement and emotional reassurance during difficult moments.
RAYE defeated several prominent contenders, including Olivia Dean’s ‘The Art of Loving,’ Paul McCartney’s ‘The Boys of Dungeon Lane,’ and Florence + The Machine’s ‘Everybody Scream.’
Other shortlisted artists included JADE, Dave, Suede, Nia Archives, Kojey Radical, Dove Ellis, Knats and the War Child compilation. The 2026 Mercury Prize win reinforces RAYE’s reputation as one of Britain’s most ambitious contemporary artists, celebrating a project built around vulnerability, experimentation and hope.
For RAYE, this recognition represents more than another trophy; it affirms her determination to create music that connects deeply with audiences worldwide.
