Antonio Conte has denied advanced talks to replace Michael Carrick at Manchester United. His statement comes as pressure grows on the United manager after a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Como.
The loss on Wednesday extended United’s winless run to seven games in all competitions. The club sit 13th in the Premier League and 20th in the Champions League standings. The results have raised fresh questions about Carrick’s future.
Conte, the former Chelsea and Napoli coach, also dismissed reports about his alleged demands. Reports claimed he wanted full control and had made financial requests before considering the United job.
“My name has been linked with numerous clubs, but there are currently no negotiations at an advanced stage,” Conte said in a statement on Friday.
Conte rejects claims of demands
The 57-year-old also addressed concerns about his personality and alleged conditions for taking a new job.
“Following a wonderful and successful spell in charge of Napoli, I will take the time I need to consider how and when to return to management,” he added.
Conte won the Premier League with Chelsea. He also led Napoli to the Serie A title in the 2024-25 season. He left the Italian club after the 2025-26 campaign.
“I have read reports of financial demands and requests for full control that I have supposedly already made to the clubs mentioned, as well as reservations about what has been described as my ‘strong personality’.
“These reports are unfounded, as there is currently no concrete basis for such assessments.”
Conte said he would consider an offer if a suitable opportunity arose. He added that both parties would discuss the terms of a possible deal.
Earlier this month, he told The Athletic that he wanted to manage a club that has “lost sight of their history”. He also hoped to help “make it shine once more”.
Brighton boss responds to Man United links
Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Huerzeler has also distanced himself from the United job.
The 33-year-old has guided Brighton to third place in the Premier League. He said his focus remained on his current team.
“I have no time to think about these rumours because we play every three days and, besides that, I have a lot of respect for Michael Carrick and what he has done with Manchester United last season,” Huerzeler told a press conference.
“He’s a great human being, a great personality. There’s nothing more to say about that.”
Meanwhile, Carrick apologised for United’s display against Como. Captain Bruno Fernandes also questioned the team’s tactics. He said the players had adopted a “mood of defeat”.
