Funke Akindele, the Nigerian filmmaker, has advised fans not to lose themselves or abandon their ambitions while pursuing romantic relationships, warning that love can become a distraction from their goals.
Akindele shared the message in an X post on Thursday, reflecting on the hard work, sacrifices and sleepless nights required to achieve success.
The actress noted that building something from scratch takes considerable effort before recognition and accolades eventually follow. However, she cautioned that romantic relationships should not derail the ambitions people have worked hard to achieve.
“You work so hard, sleepless nights, sacrifices, building something from scratch. Then come the accolades!” she wrote.
“But you see, distractions will come in different forms, sometimes even in the form of love. Nothing wrong with falling in love o! Just don’t lose yourself.”
Akindele also urged her followers to recognise their worth, remain focused on their aspirations and prioritise self-love while navigating relationships.
“Know your worth, stay focused and love yourself first,” she wrote.
“I’m preaching to myself too!”
The filmmaker’s message comes against the backdrop of her own experiences with marriage and relationships.
Akindele was previously married to Kehinde Almaroof Oloyede. Their marriage ended in 2013, less than a year after their wedding.
In an interview with Chude Jideonwo, the actress discussed how naivety and societal pressure influenced her decision to enter the marriage.
In 2016, she married JJC Skillz, the Nigerian music producer and filmmaker. The couple welcomed twin boys in December 2018.
However, their marriage ended in 2022 over “irreconcilable differences”.
