Nigerian rapper Phenom says heartbreak drove him to sleep with about 200 women in a year for two years, during which he contracted gonorrhoea eight times.
He shared his experience at a recent singles conference organised by Harvesters International Christian Centre. The rapper also discussed his journey to faith and decision to abstain from sex before marriage.
Phenom said a painful breakup pushed him into the habit, leaving him worried about his health.
“It was one heartbreak actually that made me just go crazy. It happened, and it was 200 girls in a year at the time. So I did that for like two years straight,” he said.
The experience left him anxious, as he feared he might have contracted HIV.
“It was so bad, I didn’t even have peace of mind. I felt like I had HIV, mehn. If I should sneeze, I’d be like, ‘Eh, abi I don go carry something?’ In two years, I had gonorrhoea eight times.”
He said the repeated infections became so common that he could recognise the symptoms himself.
“It was that bad, but I met somebody that told me that, oh, for you to attain certain things, you need to let go of certain things,” he said.
Phenom on finding faith and embracing celibacy
The rapper said his faith journey changed his outlook and led him to abstain from sex for about 10 years before marriage.
“I got introduced to God, and I also went celibate for like 10 years before I got married,” he said.
Phenom also revealed that he married this year and waited until his wedding night before having sex with his wife.
