Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez says he expects to return in a few weeks after undergoing surgery following an injury against Everton. The Argentina international shared the update after Chelsea secured a 2-0 Premier League victory at Everton on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
Martinez suffered a serious injury during a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite while challenging for a ball inside Chelsea’s penalty area. Medical staff treated the goalkeeper on the pitch before paramedics carried him away on a stretcher for further hospital examinations.
The 34-year-old later posted a photograph from his hospital bed, thanking supporters who had sent messages following the frightening incident. “Thanks to everyone for the messages, the operation went well,” Martinez wrote, reassuring fans about his recovery and expressing gratitude.
He added that Chelsea’s victory mattered most, before sharing his encouraging return timeline with supporters watching his recovery closely. “The most important thing is that we won and kept a clean sheet. In a few weeks, we’ll be back,” he said.
Martinez’s injury interrupted an important afternoon for Chelsea, who recorded their first Premier League clean sheet since January during the victory. Pedro Neto scored twice to secure the points, while young goalkeeper Mike Penders replaced Martinez and made his Premier League debut.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso will likely rely on Penders while Martinez recovers, although the club has not announced a precise return date. The incident also raised concern among supporters because Martinez required lengthy treatment before leaving the stadium for medical attention.
His recovery timeline offers Chelsea encouragement, but the goalkeeper must complete rehabilitation and receive medical clearance before returning to competitive action. Chelsea now face Tottenham Hotspur next Saturday, followed by a League Cup meeting with Liverpool and another Premier League clash against Manchester United.
