Macron Addresses France as Protests and Riots Spark Nationwide Unrest

French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation Sunday after protests over rising living costs erupted into riots across several cities. During his televised address on October 18, 2026, Macron condemned looting, vandalism, and violence that disrupted demonstrations across France.

The French president expressed anger and shame over the destruction, insisting that no grievance could justify attacks on communities and businesses. “Nothing justifies it, nothing explains it, nothing excuses it,” Macron declared, urging citizens to reject violence and protect their communities.

Authorities reported more than 2,400 arrests as rioters targeted shops, public buildings, and police officers during widespread demonstrations across the country. The unrest followed protests over rising living expenses and concerns about deteriorating public services, including inadequate funding for schools.

Macron distinguished peaceful demonstrators from violent groups, acknowledging legitimate public concerns while promising accountability for those responsible for destruction and looting. He also ordered a review of intelligence gathering and police preparedness to determine whether authorities missed warning signs before the unrest.

Additionally, Macron said prefects and mayors could restrict certain gatherings when necessary to protect public buildings, businesses, and residents. The president called for discussions involving students, teachers, lawmakers, trade unions, and business leaders to develop practical responses to public grievances.

Meanwhile, political leaders debated the government’s handling of the crisis as damaged communities began assessing losses and organizing cleanup operations. Macron’s address comes amid mounting social and political pressure, with France facing renewed questions about public safety, living costs, and government accountability.
