Maresca urges Man City to answer critics with wins after Liverpool rout

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca wants his team to drown out the noise surrounding the club with victories after their 3-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

City faced loud boos and angry chants following an independent commission’s finding that the club breached Premier League financial rules 114 times. However, the visitors responded with a strong display to maintain their perfect league start and move three points clear at the top.

The result also delivered the response Maresca wanted after two difficult weeks.

“We need to learn how to deal with the outside noise because of the situation, and the noise will always be there,” Maresca said. “But at the same time, we need to try to make our noise, and that is winning games, like we have done today, because at the end of the game, our fans were singing, so the noise was from us, not from Liverpool.”

Maresca praises Man City unity

The Italian celebrated the final whistle with a huge hug before joining his players to greet the travelling supporters.

City also showed unity off the pitch. Chief executive Ferran Soriano and director of football Hugo Viana travelled with the team to Anfield.

Maresca said their presence highlighted the importance of standing together during a difficult period.

“We were all together,” Maresca said. “I think for the importance of the game, Liverpool away, Anfield away, it’s a good idea from the club to be all together, the togetherness that in this moment we need.”

The manager admitted that the recent turmoil had affected his players. However, he praised their focus and response on the pitch.

“It was not easy for the players after the last two weeks,” he said. “I think they dealt with the situation very well.”

City turn boos into victory

City struggled in the first half but took control after Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was sent off in the 62nd minute.

Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki scored to seal the 3-0 victory.

Maresca said the result was important for everyone at the club, including the players, coaching staff and supporters.

“In this moment, all the organisation needs this kind of win like today,” he added. “It’s good for us coaching staff. It’s good for the players. It’s good for the fans. It’s good for the organisation.”

City have denied wrongdoing and appealed the commission’s decision. Maresca, however, said his focus remained on preparing the team for matches.

“I’m here to try to prepare for the games and win games,” he said. “I’ve said many times: hopefully, I can speak about this situation when we win the appeal.”
