Pope Leo XIV to Undergo Surgery After Lung Nodule Discovery, Vatican Announces

Pope Leo XIV to undergo surgery after doctors discovered a localized lung nodule during recent medical examinations, the Vatican announced Sunday. The 71-year-old pontiff revealed the development during his Sunday Angelus address in St Peter’s Square, reassuring worshippers about early detection.

According to Pope Leo XIV, doctors identified the nodule at a very early stage and recommended surgery to remove it. Following medical advice, the pontiff decided to proceed with the operation, which he said doctors had already scheduled for the coming days.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni confirmed that the procedure would take place early this week, with approximately one week of recovery expected afterward. The announcement immediately attracted international attention, prompting prayers, messages of support, and expressions of solidarity from Catholics and political leaders worldwide.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed support for the pontiff, praising his calm response while facing this unexpected medical challenge. Meanwhile, Pope Leo XIV thanked faithful supporters for their spiritual closeness and asked them to remember him in their prayers.

Although doctors discovered the lung nodule early, the Vatican has not disclosed whether the growth is benign or malignant. Medical experts explain that lung nodules can have several causes, including previous infections, inflammation, and, in some cases, cancerous growths.

However, the presence of a lung nodule alone does not establish a cancer diagnosis, making further medical assessment essential. Pope Leo XIV to undergo surgery remains the central development as Catholics worldwide await further official updates about his health.

The pontiff reportedly plans to receive treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, a medical facility that has treated previous popes. Despite the announcement, Leo XIV has maintained a busy public schedule, including preparations for an upcoming pastoral visit to Latin America.

His November itinerary includes Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru, although the operation and recovery could influence preparations for the demanding international journey.
