Messi scores twice against DC United as Inter Miami cruised to a 4-0 victory following his retirement from Argentina duty. The Argentine superstar returned to Major League Soccer on Saturday, four days after bidding an emotional farewell to international football.
Inter Miami needed a response after five league matches without victory, and Messi delivered an emphatic performance at Nu Stadium. Luis Suárez opened the scoring in the third minute, finishing after Germán Berterame redirected Sergio Reguilón’s cross into danger.
Suárez doubled Miami’s advantage in the thirty-ninth minute, converting another opportunity and giving the hosts control before halftime. Messi struck after the break, meeting Suárez’s pass near the six-yard box and guiding the ball past goalkeeper Sean Johnson.
His second goal arrived in the sixtieth minute, when Rodrigo De Paul found him before Messi dribbled past defenders and finished confidently. The brace lifted Messi to twenty-three league goals this season, keeping him atop Major League Soccer’s scoring charts this year.
Suárez also finished with two goals, meaning Inter Miami’s celebrated attacking partnership produced all four goals during Saturday’s home win. The result ended Miami’s five-match winless run and gave new head coach Cristian González his first league victory since taking charge.
Messi scores twice against DC United, highlighting Miami’s renewed momentum as the club climbed to second place in the Eastern Conference standings. Beyond the scoreline, Messi played the full ninety minutes and showed international retirement has not slowed his influence at club level.
His Argentina farewell came against Benin, where he scored and supplied two assists during his final appearance for the national team. Now focused on Inter Miami, Messi will aim to maintain this scoring form as the club pursues a strong MLS season finish.
Miami’s dominant display strengthened its playoff ambitions, while DC United suffered another setback and continued struggling for consistent league results.
