Actress Wumi Toriola has described Desola Afod’s warning to Yoruba actors against calling her by her first name as insulting. She urged the estranged wife of actor Kunle Afod to name those she believes have disrespected her, rather than making sweeping statements about the industry.
In a video circulating online, Desola, 44, warned actors against addressing her by her name. She insisted that her age deserved respect.
“This is the last warning to some of all these actresses and actors in the movie industry who will see me and just call me by my name. These people have taken me for granted in their industry. I am 44 years old now. I know age is just a number,” she said.
Wumi Toriola faults Desola Afod
Toriola objected to Desola’s remarks, arguing that her comments unfairly targeted the wider Yoruba film industry.
Sharing a video online, the actress wrote: “Enough is enough… Which one is ‘ti won ba ku won ki fi age won si’? That’s too much to say, Desola…”
She urged Desola to identify the people she had issues with instead of generalising about practitioners in the industry.
“I find it insulting and disrespectful that you said ‘Awon onitiata’. If you have issues with anybody, kindly put their names and pictures. ‘Awon onitiata’ is a body that covers what I have worked for and earn from. I will not allow you to disrespect it,” she said.
Toriola also advised Desola to use her father’s surname if she had concerns about bearing her estranged husband’s name.
“If you feel the name ‘Afod’ you bear is giving you a problem, you can bear your father’s name.
“You are not the only razz person.
“We were both born in Agege; everyone is just packaging themselves.”
The actress further advised Desola to learn how to manage fame and her public image. She maintained that personal grievances should not become an attack on the entire industry.
Kunle Afod addresses marriage rumours
In February, Kunle Afod addressed widespread speculation about a possible crisis in his marriage to Desola. The couple’s relationship had attracted public attention amid reports and discussions about their marriage.
