Man City Premier League charges have reached a major stage after an independent commission found Manchester City guilty following lengthy proceedings. The commission found City guilty of serious financial breaches covering nine Premier League seasons between 2009/10 and 2017/18.
According to the Premier League, City used sham commercial agreements that artificially increased revenues and reduced reported costs by over £900million. The commission also found that City submitted misstated financial accounts while concealing information from auditors and football regulators during proceedings.
Additionally, investigators found significant breaches involving Premier League and UEFA spending limits during the period under examination by officials. City also breached cooperation duties during the Premier League investigation, with three of four alleged failures ultimately upheld by commissioners.
The Premier League began investigating City in December 2018, before formally issuing its complaint under Section W during February 2023. An independent commission then conducted a 42-day hearing, which concluded in December 2024 after extensive evidence and legal arguments.
City rejected the findings, describing the ruling as disappointing and surprising while maintaining its innocence and promising further legal action. Manchester City has confirmed plans to appeal the decision, with the club facing a Friday, October 2 deadline to file.
Under Premier League rules, any appeal would proceed before a separate three-person Appeal Board following the commission’s final decision. Meanwhile, a separate sanction hearing will determine the punishment, with possible measures including fines, points deductions, and other sporting sanctions.
The eventual punishment remains undecided, meaning the current verdict does not yet establish City’s final sporting consequences within English football. For now, the Man City Premier League charges case continues through separate sanction and appeal processes before authorities reach final conclusions.
The Premier League says it wants the entire process, including appeals and published decisions, concluded as quickly as possible. Until those stages finish, Manchester City’s ultimate punishment remains unresolved, leaving supporters awaiting further developments from the ongoing disciplinary process.
