Argentina’s Javier Milei has issued a two-week ultimatum to the UK over offshore oil drilling near the Falkland Islands today. Milei ordered Argentina’s foreign ministry and legal teams to begin international arbitration proceedings against Britain over the Sea Lion project.
The Argentine government wants London to halt activities involving hydrocarbon exploitation in waters surrounding the disputed South Atlantic islands today. Milei described the project as “illegal plundering” of Argentine resources, directly reinforcing Buenos Aires’ longstanding sovereignty claim over the territory.
Argentina says unilateral resource exploitation violates international resolutions calling for negotiations between both countries over the islands’ sovereignty dispute ongoing. The Sea Lion project sits roughly 140 miles north of the Falkland Islands in the North Falkland Basin offshore waters.
UK-based Rockhopper Exploration and Israel’s Navitas Petroleum are developing the project, with commercial production currently expected to begin during 2028. Britain administers the Falkland Islands, while Argentina continues claiming sovereignty and refers to the territory as Las Malvinas disputed territory.
Meanwhile, British officials maintain that Falkland Islanders possess the right to determine their political future and develop resources independently there. The islands’ government has approved development plans, while Argentina argues such decisions cannot proceed unilaterally during the sovereignty dispute now.
Milei’s latest ultimatum gives Britain two weeks to prevent continued or planned exploitation linked to the Sea Lion project there. If Britain rejects the demand, Argentina says it will seek measures from the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
That legal route would intensify a longstanding diplomatic dispute involving sovereignty, natural resources, international law, and competing claims further today. Argentina has also pursued sanctions and legal complaints against companies and individuals connected with offshore drilling activities around the islands.
The latest confrontation places oil development at the centre of renewed tensions between Buenos Aires and London over the Falklands.
