Asa Asika, Davido’s manager, has claimed that the Afrobeats singer is the most influential person from Nigeria under 40, citing his social media reach and commercial appeal.
Speaking on Manager’s Playbook, Asika, who is also co-founder of The Plug Entertainment, pointed to Davido’s dominance across social media platforms as a key measure of his influence.
“Davido is probably the most influential person from Nigeria below the age of 40, in my opinion,” he said.
“Social media-wise, there’s no argument. Some people might debate it, but let’s use the most popular metric: social media. David is probably the most followed artiste on almost every platform.
“I joke with him about it all the time, and he laughs. I tell him, ‘You’re kind of president of Nigeria.’ And he says, ‘Leave me alone.’”
Asika also highlighted Davido’s ability to recover from difficult moments, saying the singer had experienced situations that could have ended another artiste’s career.
“Something I would see what David do and I would be like, if someone else did this, they would never get back from this,” he said.
“Sometimes, I’m like, ‘It’s over. I don’t know how I’m going to bounce back from this.’ And everyone wakes up tomorrow, and they’re like, ‘Yeah, nothing happened.’”
The music executive further described Davido as a “walking billboard”, pointing to the commercial interest surrounding the singer.
“David is a walking billboard. I have messages from brands that just want David to hold their product,” he said.
“I haven’t paid for a music video with our own money in ages.”
