Dangote refinery land challenge emerged as the billionaire described securing suitable land as the biggest obstacle during the project’s development. Dangote said he initially took a bank loan but claimed Ogun’s governor denied approval for his planned refinery project.

According to Dangote, he subsequently paid the bank back with interest after the approval issue disrupted his original plans. He then purchased land in Lagos for $100 million, only to discover that the site contained extensive marshy terrain.

That discovery created another major engineering challenge because the refinery required stable ground for its massive industrial infrastructure. Dangote explained that his company raised the land by pumping approximately 65 million cubic metres of sand.

The refinery complex eventually occupied a vast site within Lagos’ Lekki Free Zone, transforming the challenging terrain into industrial property. Earlier reports also documented the project’s reliance on dredged sand, piles, infrastructure, and a specially constructed port.

Dangote has previously described the refinery as a major financial risk that required substantial borrowing and long-term commitment. The project ultimately became Africa’s largest refinery, with operations beginning in 2024 after years of construction delays.

Today, the Dangote Refinery processes crude and supplies refined petroleum products to Nigeria and international markets across several regions. For Dangote, the Dangote refinery land challenge highlights the enormous difficulties encountered before the facility could finally become operational.

Despite those obstacles, the project now stands among Africa’s largest industrial developments and continues expanding its refining capabilities significantly.
