Kashim Shettima UNGA 81 representation will see Nigeria’s Vice President represent President Bola Tinubu during the United Nations General Assembly. Shettima departed Abuja for New York on September 20, leading Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
President Tinubu directed his deputy to represent him and lead Nigeria’s delegation during the high-level diplomatic gathering in America. During the visit, Shettima will present Nigeria’s national statement while participating in important engagements alongside global leaders there.
The 81st General Assembly high-level week runs from September 22 through September 29 at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Nigeria’s delegation includes Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal, ministers, and senior government officials.
Shettima’s programme will focus on discussions surrounding global development, international cooperation, and issues affecting Nigeria’s interests abroad. The United Nations says this year’s high-level week aims to strengthen global cooperation and advance collective action toward development.
Meanwhile, the General Assembly’s 81st session opened on September 8, with its general debate beginning September 22 in New York. Nigeria’s participation comes as world leaders gather for discussions covering development, climate action, peace, health, and other international priorities.
For Nigeria, Kashim Shettima UNGA 81 representation provides an opportunity to present national priorities during several high-level diplomatic engagements. Shettima previously addressed the General Assembly in 2024 and 2025, delivering Nigeria’s national position during those sessions in New York.
His current assignment places him among senior representatives engaging international counterparts throughout this year’s United Nations high-level week programme.
