Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has revealed what Olu Jacobs was really like on set, recalling the late actor’s strict discipline, mastery of his lines and commitment to helping younger actors improve.

Jacobs died on September 16 at the age of 84.

Speaking to BBC Focus on Africa following Jacobs’ death, Kanayo recalled how seriously the veteran actor treated his work.

He said Jacobs often arrived on set before the scheduled call time. He also recalled how rarely Jacobs struggled with his lines.

“You wouldn’t tell Olu Jacobs that call time is 9 am and he is not there by 8:30. Is it in terms of taking his lines? Such people were like demigods; difficult to forget their lines,” he said.

How Olu Jacobs challenged younger actors

Kanayo said Jacobs set a high standard for actors who worked with him. He recalled that younger performers had to prove themselves when they shared a set with the veteran.

“God save you if you are on set with Mr Olu Jacobs and you’re not proving yourself to be an actor. He will, in a very simple way, tell you how you can be better,” he said.

According to Kanayo, Jacobs willingly shared his experience with younger actors. However, he also expected them to put in the work needed to improve their craft.

Kanayo also recalled working with Jacobs in a film produced by Lancelot Imasuen in Benin. Jacobs played a king in the film, while Kanayo portrayed his prince.

Reflecting on the actor’s death, Kanayo said he wished Jacobs had stayed longer but accepted his passing.

“I would have wished that he stayed more. He has played his part, and it’s time the Lord called him home,” he said.

Born Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs on July 11, 1942, Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He later built a career across British theatre, international film and Nigerian cinema.

He co-founded the Lufodo Group with his wife, actress Joke Silva. Jacobs also received several honours, including a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa International Film Festival.

Silva disclosed in 2021 that Jacobs had been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia. He is survived by his wife and children.
