Manchester City maintained their 100% Premier League start with a thrilling 5-3 win over Sunderland, while Manchester United scraped a 1-1 draw at Fulham on Sunday.
The win keeps City three points clear at the top of the table. It also extended their winning run to seven games in all competitions.
City survive Sunderland thriller
City took the lead in the ninth minute through Enzo Fernandez.
The midfielder curled a free-kick past Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs. It was his first goal since his £125 million move from Chelsea.
Sunderland responded three minutes later. Brian Brobbey collected an Enzo Le Fee pass before firing past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Rayan Cherki restored City’s lead in the 29th minute. He poked the ball home after it fell to him inside the box.
Brobbey struck again to level the game. He finished into an empty net from a Thomas Meunier assist.
City regained the lead before half-time through Antoine Semenyo.
Semenyo then added his second goal in the 57th minute. Sunderland’s defence failed to clear the ball, allowing the forward to finish.
Brobbey completed his hat-trick with a finish from Nilson Angulo’s shot. He became the first Sunderland player to score a Premier League hat-trick since Jermaine Defoe in 2016.
Haaland finally settled the game for City. His goal also means he has scored against all 25 Premier League clubs he has faced.
“Too many goals, I prefer 1-0 much better,” smiling City manager Enzo Maresca said after the match.
“It was very difficult, but we found a way to win the game. The good thing also is that these seven official games have all been different. We experience different things,” Maresca added.
Man Utd rescue Fulham draw
Manchester United were close to suffering a third defeat in a week before Cunha’s late equaliser.
Fulham took the lead shortly after the hour mark. Lisandro Martinez turned the ball into his own net.
United pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Their pressure finally paid off in the 89th minute.
Cunha’s effort took a deflection off substitute Patrick Dorgu. The touch wrong-footed Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno and sent the ball into the net.
The draw leaves United 12th with five points. Fulham moved off the bottom, leaving Tottenham Hotspur at the foot of the table.
Isak gives Liverpool victory
Liverpool also secured a 1-0 win away to Bournemouth.
Alexander Isak scored in the 57th minute to give Liverpool the victory.
The result was only Liverpool’s second Premier League win since Andoni Iraola took charge.
Leeds United remain unbeaten after a 0-0 home draw with Crystal Palace.
