‘Widow’s Bay’ scored big at the Emmy Awards, taking home a record 14 statuettes, while ‘The Pitt’ won best drama for the second year in a row.
‘Widow’s Bay’ leads comedy winners.
Apple TV’s horror comedy, which follows a cursed New England town, beat the final season of ‘Hacks’ to win best comedy on Monday night.
‘Widow’s Bay’ also won awards for supporting actor, supporting actress, directing and writing. Combined with its technical wins earlier this month, the show collected 14 Emmys.
That made it the most awarded comedy in a single season in Emmy history.
Matthew Rhys was among the night’s biggest winners. He became the first person to win two lead acting honours at the same Emmy ceremony.
Rhys won Best Actor in a Comedy Limited Series role as a small-town mayor in ‘Widow’s Bay’. He also won best actor in a limited series for Netflix’s psychological thriller ‘The Beast in Me’.
The Welsh actor said he felt “slightly giddy and a little bit dizzy” after collecting the awards.
“At the moment, I genuinely can’t believe what’s just happened,” he told reporters backstage.
“I’m from a small country, and I’m glad we get moments to put our flag on the map and say we punch higher than our weight sometimes in Wales,” Rhys added.
Jean Smart also won her fifth Emmy for playing stand-up comic Deborah Vance in ‘Hacks’.
Her victory made her the first performer to win the Emmy for best comedy actress for every season of a show’s run.
“What a ride this has been!” Smart said on stage after thanking the creators of the HBO Max show.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus remains the only woman to come close to Smart’s record. She won best comedy actress six times during the seven-season run of ‘Veep’.
‘The Pitt’ repeats as best drama
Meanwhile, ‘The Pitt’ retained its best drama title, with Noah Wyle also winning best actor for the second straight year.
Wyle plays Dr. “Robby” Robinavitch in the HBO Max medical drama, which is set in a Pittsburgh trauma centre.
The actor described his latest victory as “overwhelming”.
A self-described “Hollywood kid”, Wyle told the Emmy audience, “This is the only club I’ve ever wanted to join. Thank you for accepting me.”
Rhea Seehorn won best drama actress for her role in ‘Pluribus’, giving Apple TV another major victory.
More Emmy highlights
‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’, which CBS cancelled before airing its final episode this year, won best variety series.
HBO Max murder mystery ‘DTF St. Louis’ won best limited series.
The Academy also honoured Michael J. Fox for his advocacy for Parkinson’s disease research and treatment.
Speaking from a wheelchair, Fox credited Hollywood’s support for helping him continue acting after his diagnosis.
“It’s because you stood up for me,” he told the crowd.
Mariska Hargitay hosted the ceremony, which NBC broadcast live and Peacock streamed.
