Timi Dakolo’s lovely story of how he met his wife, Busola Dakolo, would likely give some Nigerian ‘alpha males’ seizures. The reason is simple: the singer did exactly what many of them tell men not to do. He approached the woman he liked, pursued her and made his feelings clear.
Timi Dakolo spotted Busola in church
The Nigerian singer recently shared the story during an appearance on The Morayo Show.
Dakolo recalled seeing Busola in church and noticing that she was frowning. Instead of ignoring her, he walked up to her and started a conversation.
“She was frowning. Not a joke; I just go meet her. Fine girl like you dey frown,” he recalled.
Dakolo introduced himself and asked for her phone number. He also told her that he would call her.
However, the call did not go through.
The singer initially thought Busola had given him a wrong number. She later explained that she had given him her real number. Her phone, however, was stolen that same day.
He kept looking for her
Dakolo did not take the failed call as a reason to give up. Instead, he continued looking for Busola whenever he went to church.
“I dey search for her for church,” he recalled.
When he eventually found her again, Dakolo asked her out. He also made his interest clear through his actions.
The singer picked Busola up from work and dropped her off. He also bought her suya when she wanted some.
Busola, however, appeared to see their growing closeness as friendship. Dakolo eventually decided to clear up any confusion.
“I’m not your friend, oh. I like you very well,” he told her.
From church meeting to marriage
Dakolo and Busola met in church around 2010. They got married in 2012 and now have three children together.
The singer has also drawn inspiration from their relationship for his music. His 2014 song Iyawo Mi remains one of his romantic songs dedicated to his wife.
Dakolo previously revealed that his proposal also came with a surprise. He hid a ring in a covered plate after telling Busola that he was bringing her breakfast in bed.
She expected noodles. Instead, she got a marriage proposal.
Why the story may upset ‘alpha males’
Dakolo’s story runs counter to the popular advice that men should never appear too interested in a woman.
He saw someone he liked and approached her. He kept looking for her after losing contact. He asked her out and showed her care. Most importantly, he told her how he felt.
For some Nigerian ‘alpha males’ who describe intentional courtship as “simping”, that approach may be difficult to accept.
But Dakolo’s story offers a simple lesson. Sometimes, love requires courage, honesty and intentionality.
