WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert will retire at the end of 2026, ending her transformative seven-year tenure leading women’s basketball worldwide. The WNBA announced Engelbert’s decision Friday, confirming her departure after more than seven years overseeing the league’s rapid expansion efforts.
Engelbert became the league’s first commissioner in 2019, arriving after serving as Deloitte’s first female chief executive officer and leader. During her tenure, the WNBA grew commercially, attracting stronger media agreements, increased attention, and significant investment across women’s sports worldwide.
The league also expanded from 12 teams toward 18 franchises by 2030, creating new opportunities for players and markets internationally.
Meanwhile, Engelbert helped negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement that delivered major salary increases and improved benefits for players leaguewide. The agreement also introduced the league’s first million-dollar player salaries, marking another milestone during Engelbert’s leadership of the WNBA’s growth.
Beyond financial growth, Engelbert guided the league through the COVID-19 pandemic and helped establish its isolated playing environment during that period. Her leadership also coincided with record television audiences, stronger attendance figures, and rising cultural influence surrounding women’s basketball across America.
However, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert faced criticism from players and fans over leadership decisions, compensation, and controversies during her tenure. Despite those challenges, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver praised Engelbert’s commitment and credited her with guiding the league through unprecedented growth.
Engelbert said she leaves with gratitude, pride, and optimism after helping build a stronger and more enduring WNBA for generations. The commissioner explained that she originally expected to spend about three-and-a-half years leading the league before extending her tenure significantly.
Now, the WNBA will begin preparing for new leadership as Engelbert’s retirement approaches at the end of December this year. With Cathy Engelbert retiring, the league enters another important chapter while continuing expansion and building on its recent momentum globally.
