Atiku Says 2027 Will Be His Final Presidential Bid

Atiku Abubakar says the 2027 presidential election will be his final attempt, placing his latest ambition under intense scrutiny nationwide. The former vice president made the declaration during an April 2026 Arise Television interview while discussing age and political experience.

Atiku described 2027 as his last outing, acknowledging that the stakes would be considerably higher during the upcoming presidential contest. He also indicated willingness to support whoever emerges through the African Democratic Congress process, including an opposition candidate if necessary.

However, reports have previously misrepresented Atiku’s comments about stepping aside, prompting his media adviser to issue clarifications publicly today now. In October 2025, Paul Ibe said Atiku never promised to withdraw for another candidate after a BBC Hausa interview clearly.

Instead, Ibe explained that Atiku supported younger aspirants entering the contest and would back whoever legitimately emerged through party processes. The veteran politician has contested Nigeria’s presidency several times, including elections in 2007, 2019, and 2023 without winning nationally overall. His 2023 campaign ended with defeat against President Bola Tinubu, after Atiku secured second place behind the eventual winner nationally.

Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress has become a major platform for opposition figures seeking alternatives to the ruling APC government. Atiku has argued that experience remains important, while younger Nigerians should learn properly from established leaders before assuming national responsibilities.

Consequently, his announcement could shape opposition negotiations as political parties consider whether cooperation can produce a stronger presidential challenge ahead. For now, Atiku’s 2027 presidential bid remains active, with the politician preparing for what he describes as his final campaign.
