Chidimma Adetshina: South Africans Chant “Chidimma, Go Home” During Deportation Court Battle

Chidimma Adetshina South Africa protests have intensified as demonstrators in Cape Town chanted “Chidimma, go home” outside court. The Nigerian beauty queen attended proceedings while challenging attempts to remove her South African citizenship and potentially deport her from South Africa.

Born in Soweto, Adetshina has a Nigerian father and Mozambican mother, giving her strong connections across Southern Africa and Nigeria. Her citizenship controversy began in 2024 after South African authorities questioned her mother’s citizenship claim and investigated alleged identity fraud.

Authorities later stripped Adetshina’s South African identification documents, intensifying public debate surrounding her nationality and legal status within South Africa. The controversy forced Adetshina to withdraw from the Miss South Africa competition, despite reaching the final stage of the prestigious pageant.

After leaving the competition, she represented Nigeria at Miss Universe Nigeria and subsequently won the national beauty pageant title. Her victory created significant attention across Nigeria while reigniting discussions about nationality, identity, migration, and South African treatment of foreign nationals.

Meanwhile, protesters gathered in Cape Town carrying signs opposing immigration while directing chants specifically toward Adetshina during her court appearance. Some demonstrators shouted “Chidimma, go home,” reflecting hostility toward her Nigerian heritage and the wider immigration debate currently facing South Africa.

Groups including Operation Dudula have previously campaigned against undocumented migrants, arguing that foreigners contribute to unemployment and pressure public services. The Chidimma Adetshina South Africa protests therefore highlight deeper tensions surrounding migration, nationality, and relations between two influential African countries.

Nigeria and South Africa have experienced repeated diplomatic tensions over xenophobic attacks and disagreements involving migration and economic opportunities previously.

For Adetshina, the ongoing legal battle could determine her future status while keeping her nationality controversy under intense public scrutiny.
