South African singer Tyla has removed Lagos from the schedule of her upcoming ‘A-Pop’ world tour after facing backlash from Nigerians over renewed allegations of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

The Grammy-winning artiste announced on Monday that she would perform in Lagos on December 22. However, the announcement triggered mixed reactions on social media.

Many Nigerians criticised the planned concert. Some users called for a boycott, while others argued that music should remain separate from political and diplomatic issues.

Backlash over xenophobia concerns

The criticism followed reports of xenophobic violence targeting Nigerians in South Africa. The reports reignited tensions between the two countries.

Some Nigerians insisted that Tyla should address the attacks before performing in Lagos. Others argued that the singer should not bear responsibility for the actions of individuals in her country.

Media personality Do2dtun questioned who was promoting the Lagos event. Activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore urged Nigerians to direct their anger at political leaders rather than the singer.

Lagos removed from tour itinerary

Tyla and her management team did not comment on the controversy. However, checks by TheCable Lifestyle showed that Lagos no longer appears on the official ticket-selling platform.

The updated tour schedule excludes the December 22 Lagos date. Fans can only buy tickets for the South African shows and other international stops.

The original itinerary included Lagos as the final international stop before performances in Cape Town on January 4 and Johannesburg on January 9.

The removal has sparked speculation that the backlash influenced the decision. However, neither Tyla nor her representatives have offered an official explanation.
