Lionel Messi will not play in Wednesday’s MLS All-Star Game in Charlotte, North Carolina, as the Inter Miami star continues to recover after helping Argentina reach the World Cup final.

MLS confirmed on Saturday that Messi is one of four players who will miss the exhibition match between MLS stars and top players from Mexico’s LIGA MX.

Inter Miami midfielder Rodrigo De Paul, Chicago Fire defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi and former Fire forward Hugo Cuypers will also miss the game.

Cuypers secured his All-Star selection with Chicago Fire before completing a transfer to CF Monterrey on Thursday. De Paul will skip the event after his involvement with Argentina at the World Cup. Mbokazi misses out because of a lower-body injury. The South African defender also featured at this summer’s World Cup.

MLS named four replacements for the withdrawn players.

Inter Miami midfielder Yannick Bright joins the squad after helping the club post a 9-2-1 record in his 12 starts this season. Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Andres Cubas also earned a call-up after registering three assists in 12 appearances.

Houston Dynamo forward Guilherme received a selection after recording eight goals and five assists in his first season with the club. Chicago Fire forward Philip Zinckernagel completes the replacement list with five goals and seven assists this season.

Messi’s absence will be a major talking point ahead of the MLS All-Star Game, which takes place on Wednesday in Charlotte.
