Warner Bros. Animation gave fans a glimpse of its expanding adult animation slate at the Annecy International Animation Festival, unveiling first looks at Get Jiro and Hit Squad while announcing a new animated adaptation of Dark Shadows.
The presentation underscored the studio’s ambition to broaden adult animation beyond comedy with projects spanning horror, action and superhero stories.
Among the biggest announcements was Dark Shadows, a reimagining of the 1960s cult supernatural television series. The project is in early development, with Lisa Holdsworth serving as executive producer and showrunner.
Warner Bros. Animation also revealed the first images from Hit Squad, a Gerry Anderson-inspired puppet series blending CGI and practical effects.
“We’re truly happy to bring this brand new series, written by Gerry Anderson in the late 1970s, to the screen,” said Giraldi. ”With upgrades on the puppetry, and a blend of CG and practical effects, ‘Hit Squad’ blends action with dark humour, brought forth by both Hanna-Barbera Europe and Warner Bros. Animation teams.”
Attendees were also treated to the first episode of Get Jiro, a long-awaited adaptation of the best-selling Vertigo series co-created by the late Anthony Bourdain and Joel Rose. The screening introduced the show’s post-apocalyptic world and revenge-driven storyline.
The showcase also highlighted upcoming DC projects, including Absolute Batman, Joker: Laugh Riot and Krypto.
Speaking on the studio’s creative direction, Peter Girardi said, “We don’t have a house style. Instead, we let the show dictate that.”
Warner Bros. Animation also described its upcoming Adult Swim series Keeping Up With the Joneses as part of “an emphasis on original stories, with character-based comedy bringing the ‘family comedy show’ genre to our long-time partners and friends at Adult Swim.”
