Ariana Grande has released the music video for her latest single, “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” a horror-inspired visual that features actor Justin Long and offers fans a glimpse into her upcoming album era.
Directed by Christian Breslauer, who previously helmed Grande’s 2024 short film “Brighter Days Ahead,” the video was shot by acclaimed cinematographer Janusz Kamiński. It opens with Long burying Grande in an underground bunker filled with stacks of black-and-white composition notebooks labelled with her insecurities.
The single marks the beginning of Grande’s new musical chapter ahead of the release of her eighth studio album, “Petal,” due out July 31 via Republic Records. The project was executive-produced and co-written by Grande and longtime collaborator Ilya, who has worked with the singer since “Dangerous Woman” and most recently on “Eternal Sunshine.”
Grande announced “Petal” in April, describing the album as “something full of life and growing through the cracks of something cold and hard and challenging.”
Some fans have interpreted “Hate That I Made You Love Me” as a breakup anthem, while others believe it reflects Grande’s relationship with public perception.
The singer is also preparing to launch her “Eternal Sunshine” tour, which begins June 6 at Oakland Arena. While the tour was originally tied to her 2024 album and its deluxe edition, “Brighter Days Ahead,” fans expect Grande to introduce songs from the upcoming “Petal” project.
Speaking recently on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast, Grande hinted that touring may become less frequent in the future.
“I don’t want to say anything definitive… I do know that I’m very excited to do this small tour, but I think it might not happen again for a long, long, long, long, long time.”
