Wale Davies, popularly known as Tec, has shared fresh details about the early management journey behind Tems’ rise to global fame, describing artist management as a commitment almost as serious as marriage.
Speaking during an interview with Afrobeats Intelligence, Tec explained that managing an artist requires complete dedication and constant communication.
“Will you manage me? I classify that on the same level as ‘Will you marry me?’” he said. “You fuse your life with another person 100 percent. Sometimes you may even speak to your artiste more than your partner.”
Tec revealed that he initially hesitated when Tems asked him to manage her because he understood the weight of the responsibility. According to him, he feared disappointing her and knew balancing management with his own music career would be difficult.
“I don’t take those things lightly,” he said. “I’m not going to follow you to radio stations every morning because I’m an artiste myself.”
The rapper said both of them later agreed that finding a dedicated manager would be the best decision for Tems’ career. Shortly after, Tems introduced him to Muyiwa, someone she believed would fit perfectly into the team.
Tec explained that he already knew Muyiwa through previous work with singer Odunsi and immediately connected with him. He also praised Tems for having strong discernment and making smart career decisions early on.
According to Tec, building the right team around Tems played a huge role in shaping her journey into becoming one of Africa’s biggest global music stars today.
