Russian animator Oleg Kuzovkov is set to produce the first original feature film based on the globally successful animated series Masha and the Bear, marking a new chapter for the YouTube record-breaking franchise.
The upcoming film follows Kuzovkov’s decision to regain creative control of the beloved characters after the expiration of the license previously granted to Animaccord. He has now launched an independent animation company, Studio MiM, based in Los Angeles and Moscow, to produce the movie and planned sequels.
The animated series remains one of YouTube’s biggest global successes. Its episode, “Recipe for Disaster,” has amassed more than 4.6 billion views, making it the platform’s most-watched non-music video.
According to Studio MiM, the film will take the franchise in a new direction. “The creative team will introduce global audiences to a rebooted vision of the characters as they explore new adventures in their unique kind-hearted comedy manner,” the company said.
Kuzovkov also expressed excitement about expanding the franchise into a feature-length production.
“I’m truly touched by this opportunity to expand the world of ‘Masha and the Bear’ to its first long-form feature. It’s an exciting, creative challenge – one that I wholeheartedly embrace – and my wonderfully creative and excited team is equally energised and eager to bring it to life with the same spirit, humour, and heart that made the old series so beloved.”
