It wasn’t easy to revisit, but Laycon opened up about one of the most difficult periods of his life during a candid chat on Echoo Room.
He shared that before heading to university, he began receiving film offers following his breakout moment on Big Brother Naija. Despite the attention, Laycon said he was sceptical about the opportunities, questioning whether they were based on actual acting ability or simply his popularity. According to him, he often turned things down after reflecting on the intent behind the offers.
Addressing criticism about his career direction, Laycon pushed back against claims that his move into scriptwriting and other creative pursuits was due to struggles in music. He noted that people will always have opinions, but insisted his decisions are driven by growth and exploration, not pressure or failure.
The conversation became more emotional when he spoke about his mother’s illness at the time. Laycon revealed he was dealing with intense pressure, which led to unhealthy coping habits, including misusing medication and mixing it with alcohol. While he stopped short of labelling it entirely as depression, he admitted it was a combination of overwhelming circumstances and internal battles.
He also confirmed that his mother’s condition became critical around the period he was in the spotlight. Reflecting on that time, Laycon stated that things could have ended very differently, adding that he firmly believes his mother might not have survived if events had not unfolded the way they did.
