Lionel Messi Invests in Grassroots Football with Cornellà Purchase

Lionel Messi has acquired fifth-division Spanish side Unió Esportiva Cornellà, a move that reflects his growing focus on developing grassroots football and strengthening his long-standing ties to Barcelona.

The Argentine star’s decision to invest in the modest club based just outside the city where he rose to global fame with FC Barcelona signals a shift toward nurturing local talent. Despite having no direct historical link to Cornellà, the club’s strong youth system and location in Catalonia appear to have influenced the move.

“This move reinforces Messi’s close ties to Barcelona and his commitment to the development of sport and local talent in Catalonia,” Cornellà said in a statement.

Founded in 1951, Cornellà has spent most of its history in Spain’s lower leagues and currently plays in the fifth tier, with a stadium capacity of just 1,500. However, its reputation for developing players, including stars like Jordi Alba, adds to its appeal as a long-term investment in football development.

Messi’s purchase also places him back in indirect competition with rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who recently invested in UD Almería. Their storied rivalry continues to extend beyond the pitch into business ventures.
