The annual race — now in its 11th edition — once again showcased East African dominance in elite distance running, with athletes from Kenya and Ethiopia topping the men’s and women’s leaderboards. While Kenyan runner Ezra Kipchumba Kering took the men’s title earlier in the day, it was Dinke who outpaced her closest competitors to secure the women’s crown.

Dinke’s commanding victory continued a remarkable run of success for Ethiopian women in the Lagos City Marathon. The 2026 edition further cemented her reputation as a consistent elite performer in major road races, navigating the challenging Lagos course that winds through bustling streets, scenic waterfronts and crowded cheering zones.

With a finishing time of 2:37:36, Dinke demonstrated composure and stamina that kept her ahead of a field of world-class competitors. Her performance was one of the highlights of the marathon’s women’s competition, earning her both acclaim and the top prize awarded by the organisers.

The Lagos City Marathon attracts runners from across Africa and abroad, blending competitive sport with community participation. Athletes compete not only for medals but also for significant prize money, while thousands of local runners take part in the 10 km and 42 km races held on the same day.

Legacy of Success for Ethiopian Women

Dinke’s win continues a proud tradition for Ethiopian women at the Lagos marathon. Ethiopian runners have frequently taken home top honours at this event, with past champions including Guta Meseret Hirpa and others who have excelled on the international marathon circuit.

The victory is a testament both to her training and to Ethiopia’s sustained excellence in long-distance running a sport in which athletes from the East African nation have made their mark globally for decades.

Alongside international winners, Nigerian athletes also made notable impressions in the race. Deborah Badung was the first Nigerian female finisher this year, crossing the line with a strong time that earned applause from supporters and organisers alike.

The marathon has become one of Africa’s premier road racing events, attracting elite athletes, amateur runners and cheering crowds eager to witness thrilling performances. Its 2026 edition was no exception, blending sporting excellence with community celebration in Lagos.
