The award which reflects on impactful leadership and public service was presented to Senator Tinubu by the Leadership Newspaper board earlier this year as part of their annual recognition of individuals who have shaped Nigeriaโ€™s socioโ€‘political landscape. In her remarks at the ceremony, she described the award as a shared achievement with Nigerians committed to service, unity and progress.ย

In her acceptance speech, Mrs. Tinubu emphasised the need for cohesion across culture, religion and political divides as essential to Nigeriaโ€™s future. โ€œThe future of our nation depends on our willingness to work together across cultural and religious differences for the good of all,โ€ she said, urging citizens to prioritise unity and collective purpose as the country navigates complex national challenges.

The Leadership Annual Conference and Awards brought together notable personalities, including former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, United Nations Deputy Secretaryโ€‘General Dr. Amina Mohammed, state governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers and senior government officials. Senator Tinubu described the honour as not only for her but for all Nigerians โ€œwho work tirelessly to uplift others and ignite hope in our nation.โ€

Remi Tinubu also acknowledged the late Sam Ndaโ€‘Isaiah, founding chairman of Leadership Newspaper, praising the institutionโ€™s dedication to informed journalism and democratic discourse. She commended the leadership of the newspaperโ€™s current board, noting their role in sustaining and expanding the founding vision of the organisation.

While the award cites Person of the Year 2015, the recognition was formally presented at the 2026 Leadership Annual Conference. The distinction recalls her longstanding engagement in public life, including her advocacy for community development, womenโ€™s empowerment and inclusive policies that expand opportunities for Nigerians across different social strata.

Senator Remi Tinubu, a former lawmaker and advocate, has often used her platform to champion causes related to health, education and social inclusion. Her involvement in public service extends beyond ceremonial roles, with several initiatives and campaigns aimed at supporting vulnerable groups and promoting civic participation.

Public reactions to the award announcement have included praise from supporters who see the recognition as a testament to her dedication to service. Some commentators noted that the award reflects a broader conversation about the role of political spouses and leaders in driving social impact agendas in Nigeria. Others have highlighted her recent speeches calling for unity and national healing as consistent with the values celebrated by Leadership Newspaper.

The Leadership Annual Conference and Awards has a history of honouring figures from various sectors including politics, business and civil society whose work influences national discourse and development. Past recipients have included notable leaders and public figures recognised for excellence and impact in their respective fields.ย

As the First Lady continues her duties both at home and abroad, the award serves as an affirmation of her public engagement and leadership presence, as well as a platform for further conversations around unity, service and inclusive progress in Nigeria.
