The Lagos State Government has announced a six week shutdown and traffic diversion around Apongbon Bridge as authorities begin repair works on critical sections of the busy infrastructure linking parts of Lagos Island and the mainland.
According to officials, the temporary closure is part of ongoing efforts to maintain road safety and prevent structural damage that could disrupt movement in one of the cityโs busiest commercial corridors. The bridge, which connects key routes leading to Ebute Ero, CMS and surrounding markets, handles heavy daily traffic from traders, commuters and logistics operators.

The Ministry of Transportation said the repair project will focus on damaged portions of the bridge identified during routine inspections. Engineers reportedly discovered areas requiring urgent reinforcement to ensure the long term durability of the structure and reduce the risk of accidents.
To minimise congestion during the Apongbon Bridge shutdown, traffic managers have introduced alternative routes for drivers heading toward Lagos Island and nearby business districts. Motorists approaching from Ijora Olopa and the Eko Bridge axis are expected to follow designated diversion signs and cooperate with traffic officers deployed across the area.
Officials also urged commuters to plan their journeys ahead of time, noting that peak hour congestion may increase during the first phase of the closure. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed that personnel will monitor traffic flow daily and adjust diversion plans if necessary.

For traders and business owners operating around Ebute Ero and Idumota markets, the announcement has sparked mixed reactions. Some say the repairs are necessary to prevent larger disruptions in the future, while others worry about the impact on daily sales and logistics during the six week period.
Infrastructure maintenance projects have become a recurring focus for the Lagos State Government as authorities attempt to manage the strain placed on roads and bridges by the cityโs growing population. Apongbon Bridge in particular has experienced heavy usage over the years, making periodic upgrades unavoidable.
Officials say the repair works are expected to be completed within the six week timeline, provided weather conditions and traffic management efforts remain stable. Commuters are encouraged to follow official updates through Lagos State traffic channels for real time information on diversions and reopening schedules.
The announcement adds to a series of recent infrastructure interventions aimed at improving safety and mobility across Lagos, with authorities maintaining that proactive repairs are necessary to avoid long term closures that could have a wider economic impact on the city.
