Seyi Tinubu Bags Fresh Lagos Chieftaincy Title

Seyi Tinubu, son of Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has received another significant traditional honour in Lagos State, further cementing his growing recognition within Yoruba cultural institutions.

The young entrepreneur was recently conferred with the chieftaincy title “Okanlomo of Eyo Oba Alakete Pupa, Laba Ekun”, a respected title linked to the historic Eyo tradition of Lagos. The ceremony took place ahead of the famous Eyo Festival, an event deeply rooted in the state’s cultural identity and heritage.

The Eyo institution is one of Lagos’ most revered traditional symbols, often associated with leadership, transition, and communal values. Being admitted into this lineage is widely regarded as a sign of acceptance by indigenous custodians of culture and a recognition of one’s contribution to society and tradition.

Adding to the significance of the event, Layal Tinubu, Seyi Tinubu’s wife, was also honoured with a complementary chieftaincy title, highlighting the couple’s growing prominence within Lagos’ traditional and social circles.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu publicly congratulated Seyi Tinubu, describing the honour as a reflection of service, character, and alignment with the values of the people. His message emphasized the importance of preserving culture while encouraging younger generations to remain connected to their roots.

This latest recognition comes just days after Seyi Tinubu received another traditional title from the Alaafin of Oyo, where he was installed as Okanlomo of Yorubaland. The back-to-back honours have sparked conversations across social media, with supporters praising the acknowledgments while critics debate the increasing visibility of political families within traditional institutions

Regardless of public opinion, the conferment brings to attention the enduring relevance of Yoruba chieftaincy systems in modern Nigeria. Traditional titles remain powerful symbols of identity, continuity, and social recognition, bridging the gap between heritage and contemporary influence.

As discussions continue, one thing is clear: Seyi Tinubu’s recent chieftaincy titles have placed him firmly in the national spotlight, reinforcing the intersection of culture, leadership, and modern public life in Nigeria.
