Wilfred Ndidi Named Super Eagles Captain Ahead of AFCON 2025

Nigeria’s national football team has ushered in a new era of leadership with Wilfred Ndidi named Super Eagles captain ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. The decision marks a significant moment for the seasoned midfielder, who steps into the role following the international retirement of former captain William Troost‑Ekong.

Ndidi, 28, takes on the leadership mantle as the Super Eagles prepare for one of the most important tournaments on the African football calendar. His appointment comes after he wore the captain’s armband for Nigeria during recent CAF World Cup qualifying playoff fixtures, gaining experience and praise for his calm leadership and work ethic on and off the pitch.

A Respected Leader in Midfield

The former Leicester City midfielder, now plying his trade with Turkish side Besiktas FC, has been a mainstay in the Nigerian midfield for nearly a decade. Ndidi made his senior international debut in August 2015 and has since earned over 70 caps for the Super Eagles, representing the nation at multiple major tournaments and qualifiers.

Ndidi’s leadership credentials have been widely discussed among football analysts and former players, with many pointing to his composure under pressure and his tactical intelligence as reasons he was a natural choice for captaincy. Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh publicly backed Ndidi as the right player to lead the national team after Troost‑Ekong’s departure.

While some voices in the football community, including ex‑striker Odion Ighalo, have suggested alternative leadership options such as striker Victor Osimhen, the Nigeria Football Federation and the team’s coaching staff appear confident in Ndidi’s leadership role for AFCON 2025.

Ndidi succeeds William Troost‑Ekong, who announced his retirement from international football in early December after a decade of service and leadership with the Super Eagles. Ekong had captained the team through several tournaments and World Cup qualifying campaigns, establishing himself as one of Nigeria’s most dependable defenders.

The transition in leadership comes at a pivotal moment for Nigerian football as the team seeks to build on past performances and compete for its fourth AFCON title. Ndidi’s appointment makes him one of the most senior figures in the squad, joining other experienced internationals such as Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, and Victor Osimhen.
