Nollywood audiences get a fresh dose of chills today as IDIA, a psychological horror film deeply rooted in Edo mythology, premieres in cinemas across Nigeria. The movie features acclaimed actress Mercy Aigbe in a lead role, alongside Linda Osifo, Tope Tedela and Gbubemi Ejeye.

Set against the rich backdrop of Edo cultural traditions and belief systems, the story centres on a seemingly miraculous child born to a childless couple—a blessing that slowly unravels into something far darker. The film touches on themes of motherhood, faith, destiny and the haunting cost of answered prayers.
Directed by the duo Ese Ariremu and Jide Oyegbile (also known as “JBlaze”), IDIA was produced by Jasper Aziegbemhin and Yvonne Ajoki under Golden Mhinutes Pictures. The makers emphasise that the film is not just about jump-scares, but about building tension through belief and identity.
In a recent interview, director Ariremu commented that the film was designed to begin as a family drama and gradually transition into psychological horror: “We wanted the audience to feel safe first, then unsettled… silence can be louder than screams.”

Mercy Aigbe, whose versatility in Nollywood is well-known, portrays one of her more emotionally intense roles in this project. Her character’s journey becomes a conduit for the film’s broader commentary on cultural expectation and spiritual cost.
For viewers, IDIA offers something different: a horror film with local flavour, referencing Edo-language phrases, traditional settings and folklore rather than generic supernatural tropes. It promises to be both entertaining and thought-provoking especially for those who appreciate stories where culture and myth converge.
As the film opens today, cinema-goers across Nigeria will have an opportunity to witness this genre-blending effort. Whether you’re a horror fan, a lover of Nigerian culture, or just curious about what new directions Nollywood is taking, IDIA is one to watch.
