Oyo APC Slams Governor Makinde Over Proposed Entertainment Taxes

The opposition party in Oyo State has taken a firm stand against what it describes as a burdensome tax regime for social events introduced by the state government. In a statement issued by the APC’s publicity secretary, the party accused Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration of rolling out “entertainment taxes” targeting weddings, naming ceremonies, burial wakes, club-events and other social gatherings.

According to the reports, ceremonies such as weddings and naming events are now being required to pay levies of between ₦25,000 and ₦35,000 before the events go ahead, while other gatherings are also being subjected to newly introduced charges.

The APC described the policy as “anti-people” and “ill-timed”, arguing that citizens, including civil servants, artisans, business owners and commercial transport operators, are already grappling with multiple taxes and the nation’s weak economic environment. The party warned that adding another layer of cost on social functions will only deepen frustration and economic hardship.

In its reaction the APC called on the governor to reverse the policy immediately, stating that forcing residents to pay these levies just to host a social event is tantamount to pushing them “to the wall”.

On the other side, the state government has denied the authenticity of the tax document circulating online, which purportedly announces the new entertainment tax policy. The state’s Commissioner for Information clarified that no genuine government tax document has been issued, and urged the public to disregard the claim.

Analysts say this conflict highlights broader tensions around revenue generation in Nigerian states, where governments seek to raise internally generated revenue (IGR) amid shrinking federal allocations, while citizens push back against added financial burdens.

For households planning social events in Oyo State, this situation introduces uncertainty. Until clarity is provided by the government or legislation formally enacted the tax remains disputed. The opposition’s pressure may shape the final outcome, and many residents will be watching closely.
